Medical cannabis refers to cannabis-based products that are prescribed by a specialist doctor for certain medical conditions. These products are tightly regulated and legally available in the UK under specific circumstances.

You may be eligible if:

  • You have a diagnosed medical condition
  • You have tried at least two licensed treatments or therapies for your condition without sufficient relief
  • There are no clear contraindications, such as a history of psychosis A consultation with a specialist clinician will determine your suitability.

Medical cannabis may be considered for a range of conditions, including:

  • Chronic pain (neuropathic, musculoskeletal, fibromyalgia)
  • Anxiety and PTSD
  • Epilepsy (particularly treatment-resistant forms)
  • Multiple sclerosis-related symptoms
  • Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting
  • Sleep disorders

Tourette’s syndrome
Each case is assessed individually, based on clinical need and treatment history.

Yes, since November 2018, certain cannabis-based products for medical use (CBPMs) have been legal in the UK when prescribed by a specialist doctor on the General Medical Council Specialist Register.

No referral is required to book an initial consultation with us. However, having access to your medical history and treatment records can support the prescribing process.

During your consultation, a specialist will:

  • Review your medical history and current symptoms
  • Confirm that you’ve tried at least two other treatments
  • Discuss the risks, benefits, and suitability of medical cannabis

If appropriate, create a treatment plan that the specialist will discuss during an MDT meeting afterwards

Prescriptions may include:

  • Cannabis oils (oral drops)
  • Capsules
  • Dried flower for vaporisation

The form and dosage will be tailored to your needs.

Most prescriptions use carefully controlled levels of CBD (non-psychoactive) and/or THC (psychoactive). The goal is to relieve symptoms while minimising any unwanted psychoactive effects. Your clinician will advise on what’s appropriate.

If your prescription contains THC, you must not drive while impaired. Driving with detectable levels of THC in your system could be an offence, even with a prescription, unless you can show it was lawfully prescribed and you are not impaired. Always follow clinical advice.

Initial consultation: £85

Follow-up appointments (Typically required every 60-90 days): £75

Medication: The cost of medical cannabis treatment varies depending on the type of product prescribed (e.g., oil, capsule, or dried flower) and the individual dosage required. During your consultation, your clinician will discuss suitable options and provide a clear outline of any associated costs before proceeding.

Most UK private insurers do not cover medical cannabis treatment at this time. It is typically a self-funded treatment.

Once prescribed, your medication is dispensed by a licensed UK pharmacy and delivered to your home via secure courier.

You are permitted to travel with your prescribed medical cannabis within the UK. However, international travel is more complex. Some countries may accept a valid UK prescription, while others strictly prohibit cannabis in any form, even for medical use.

Before travelling abroad, it is essential to research the laws of your destination country as well as any transit countries to ensure you remain compliant.

If you plan to travel, we recommend requesting a travel support letter from LeafEase. This letter outlines your prescription and confirms the medical necessity of your medication. To request one, please contact our Patient Care Coordinators at info@leafease.co.uk.

Please note: travel support letters are subject to an additional fee.
